Review of A Listening Thing by Heather Lenz

“Many times I found myself thinking “yes, that’s exactly it, that’s the problem, that’s the heavy loneliness so many have to bear in life, that is the way I feel also.” — Heather Lenz

Warm thanks to Heather Lenz for reading my novel, A Listening Thing, and sharing her thoughts and impressions on her website, Ravens Among Me. It’s deeply appreciated.

William - I have made a house move recently and had to make the tough choice of which books to bring, which to store, and which to possibly give away. Last time I moved I took 1000 down to 600. This time the cut is down to 300. Beautiful editions and rare publications stay. Some classics that can easily be found again have been given up. The 3 volumes of Proust I spent one summer with will not surrender. And your book, my friend - if I had but one bookcase permitted me to populate with the dear friendships that the best books represent - yours would be there.

In so saying, Gabriella, you’ve given me a gift this day — a gift only a failed memory can ever take away.

Then I will keep reminding you, dear friend. As the presence of your book reminds me, even in the forgetful times. Maybe it's better to have fewer books - and fewer retained memories - let us both strive only to retain the worthy.
