A spirit by the door

A spirit by the door — but should that alarm you
mind the latch — though pity’s all the more the in and out
of such who turn their back on her — for a closed door
is a closed heart — or had you never thought of that
in your wily winter watch — the malevolent one
who keeps the dark this side the more
the mind’s at mindless war?

A mindless war indeed, we fear so, the very thing that we create in our minds, how lovely you say it William
