Soft Landing

No end in mind

To begin, time and again, with no end in mind

To end, time and again, with no mind to begin

To find, time and again, you are now and then

(the rain, on a leaf, in the hand, of a friend)

Starry night

Infinity, to me, is the wink of an eye;
the eye, where we meet, in the sweet by and by;
here, to complete, with eve, drawing nigh;
this dream, deep and neat, without knowing why;
we live, but to think, what we see, is the sky.

Enlightened

Posture grand,
leaf in hand,
I stand,

(a statue in your garden)

Fear not a little song

Fear not a little song,
a little song, sung low, sung long,
sung in, sung on,

(make not your voice a wilderness)

’tis gettin’ to be

Well, now, ’tis gettin’ to be,
your love, and my love, make three;
and how pretty we’ll be, when spring comes,
fancy and free, as that deep, dark, dear,
wide, gray tide of a lonesome bell
rings in the valley.

Old acquaintance

I’ll wake with a gape, or a grapple;
you’ll take the cake; we’ll wind the watch;
and for the sake of auld lang syne, make love
of what’s left of what’s lost of our sweet
precious time.

sic transit gloria mundi

person, place, or thing — if you would see them, set aside each name;
if you would love them, say not ours, or yours, or mine;
and if you would praise them, let them,
o pray, let them, sing.

Winter walk (not all are lost)

Wander east, or west, your presence, best, to express, wonder,
at the least, most blessed, of longer, tender, yonder, fonder, consequence.

Ancient as she is

Ancient as she is, teaching birth
to old age, and youth to play,

from winter looms,
her fabric falls

away,

(and rain is like your soul’s first day)

Tiny bells dressed in night gowns

Tiny bells dressed in night gowns — dewdrops mined
by busy tongues of goats — rim of rock — pasture crowns
your back and shoulders bare and brown
to breast your name
now flown

(to tune of tiny bells)

shepherd mind your flock
now down from cross to reach

(here the page is torn)

another shore

Ocean, boat, sail

Ocean, boat, sail — love what you love,
and love what you do not love — sink with grace
or float — choose not — where you are least,
love is most — love is love’s result.

Speech, thought, bone

Speech, thought, bone — each, by word,
is formed — think of earth — geology, alone,
how it acts on stone — preach, not, one,
in name of better worth — believe,
in, all.

Almost never was

Through the kitchen window,
the cat, watching me drink a glass of water.

Through the kitchen window,
me, watching the cat, watching me.

Through the kitchen window,
the cat, watching me, watching him, watching.

Through the kitchen window,
a man, holding a glass emptied of water,
but full of everything else there is,
rushing in and out so quickly,
it appears there is nothing,
worth watching.

The cat, watches on.

The man, disappears,
thinking, he might be a window of sorts.

The cat, disappears,
watching, what might have been,
and, almost, never was.

That, too, disappears.

The rain, raining on, rains on rain.

Cat windows. Corn fields. Day dreams. Winter loves.

And then one night

And then one night, night said,

Light is a message so light,
light lights upon light’s light light itself.

To which I replied,

So much like my reason, friend,
so rightly, so lightly, so brightly flown.

Let’s call this life our lantern

Let’s call this life our lantern, love,
for it lights our path with days now gone.

Let’s call this love our light.

Let’s call our past this love.

Let’s call this day our night,
our path our light, our way the stars above.

As different yet the same

As different as one snowflake from another,
yet the same, still, congregation,
poised, on the very verge,
of belief

(what else to do, than sing?)

Call me strange

Call me strange, but I do not perceive,
and feel no need to believe,

that there is a clear difference
between what is real and what is imagined.

Indeed, to me, they are less two things,
than the ocean seems,

and what the ocean means,
in its solitary roar.

Letter a door, word a house

Letter a door, word a house,
phrase alone, sentence a home,
story to found a life upon,

(

through the window a paper birch,
on the ground her scroll

)

Nor large, nor small

Nor large, nor small, nor any size at all,
bright birds, upside down, above the garden wall,
hang on the rugged deep-green juniper;
while far below, or near, or there,
so clear, I hear them call,
fine fare, dine well,
good cheer,
be here,
now.

A spirit by the door

A spirit by the door — but should that alarm you
mind the latch — though pity’s all the more the in and out
of such who turn their back on her — for a closed door
is a closed heart — or had you never thought of that
in your wily winter watch — the malevolent one
who keeps the dark this side the more
the mind’s at mindless war?

A ghost in your sweet care, the mist now mine to wear,
you summon me from here — confess, you do, my dear,
address your fate — declare my fear — the hour
late — caress, that I appear.

Mirror, mirror

Throughout this life its fleeting span

impermanence

the greatest teacher and truest friend

The spirit knows not years

The spirit knows not years
and when at last we learn to die
sings dream to dance
and light to fly

(as if life were ever otherwise)
